The Stitching

The single most reliable indicator of a handmade leather bag is the stitching.

Machine stitching is perfectly uniform — every stitch identical, every spacing exact. It looks clean, but it is also fragile. If one thread breaks, the entire seam can unravel rapidly because each stitch is linked to the next in a chain.

Handmade stitching — specifically saddle stitching, the traditional method used by artisans — uses two needles and two threads working simultaneously from opposite sides. Each stitch is independent. If one breaks, the rest hold. The result is a seam that is stronger, more durable, and will outlast the leather itself.

Look closely at the stitching on any bag you are considering. Handmade stitching will have a subtle, slight irregularity — not sloppiness, but the honest mark of a human hand. Each stitch will be tight, consistent, and slightly angled. That angle is the signature of saddle stitching, and it cannot be replicated by machine.

The Edges

Factory bags almost always have painted or sealed edges applied by machine — a thin coating that covers the raw leather edge quickly and cheaply. It looks fine at first, but chips and peels within months.

A handmade bag has edges that are burnished — worked by hand using tools, heat, and sometimes beeswax, until the raw edge becomes smooth, rounded, and polished. It takes time. It cannot be rushed. But the result is an edge that improves with age rather than deteriorating.

Run your finger along the edge of a bag. If it feels perfectly uniform and slightly plastic, it has been machine sealed. If it feels smooth but organic — warm, slightly waxy, with a depth to it — it has been finished by hand.

The Leather Itself

Genuine handmade leather goods are almost always made from full-grain or top-grain leather — the highest quality cuts from the hide, with the natural surface intact. Mass-produced bags typically use corrected-grain leather — sanded down to remove imperfections and then embossed with an artificial grain pattern to create false uniformity. It looks consistent because it is artificial. It feels flat because it is.

The Hardware

Look at the zips, clasps, rings, and buckles. On a well-made bag, hardware is selected deliberately — solid brass or copper, heavy to the touch, with a satisfying weight and click. The attachment points are reinforced, often with additional layers of leather or carefully stitched loops.

On factory bags, hardware is often lightweight, hollow, or coated. It looks similar at a glance but feels insubstantial. It is the first thing to fail.

The Interior

Turn the bag inside out if you can, or look as deeply inside as possible. A carefully made bag will have a clean, considered interior — seams that are as thoughtful as the exterior, lining that is cut and placed with intention. Nothing is hidden because nothing needs to be.

Rushed production hides its shortcuts in the places buyers rarely look. If the interior feels careless relative to the exterior, it usually is.
